Ormideia Village
East District of Larnaca
Ormideia is a large village in the eastern
part of the Larnaca District with a commanding church
of Agios Constantinos. In the 18th century it was
a major tourist centre for the many merchants and
diplomats resident in Larnaca. Ormideia is famous
for fruit-growing oranges, lemons and grapefruits.
|
 |
An ancient settlement existed here but was completely
destroyed by the unscrupulous digging of General Palma
Luigi de Cesnola, who, in 1865, was appointed as the
American consul and who exploited the island's ancient
treasures, destroying many sites of archaeological
interest forever.
Whether you come for your holidays or whether you
intend to stay as a permanent resident, Ormideia has
a lot to offer. As a traditional village and not an
artificial tourist development, it provides almost
everything you need and expect: from shops to restaurants
and from schools to leisure activities.
|
And if there is anything you cannot find
in Ormideia, then it will be within easy reach. The
A3 motorway, which passes the outskirts of the village
(but which is not visible from the village) takes
you to the town of Larnaca (about 28 km), the airport
of Larnaca (about 36 km), the capital Nicosia (about
60 km), the tourist centres of Ayia Napa (about 20
km) and Protaras (about 32 km) or the south-eastern
end of the island: Cape Greco (about 40 km).
|
 |
If you have no car, a regular bus service will take
you there.
The coast, which is ideal for fishing, is only about
2 km away, and a small fishing harbour about 3 km.
There is a beach with shop and cafe facilities as
well as a full watersports program at the Dhekeleia
base, 5km from the village.
Along the coast, from Larnaca to Cape Greco, and
from there up to the border of the Turkish occupied
area, there are plenty of beautiful sandy beaches.
Whether you are looking for a quiet place, an area
for a picnic, a busy beach or any kind of watersport
activities, you will find it. The maximum distance
to any of these places is about 40 km.
